The GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam as Executive Agency of ICDP

The GFZ Potsdam is acting as the Executive Agency of the ICDP on behalf of the ICDP members. The GFZ was founded in 1992 as one of three new “Big Research Centres” in East Germany. It is a Foundation of Public Law, belongs to the Helmholtz Association of Germany Research Centres and represents the German Research Centre for Geosciences. It currently has about 850 employees (approx. 480 scientists).

The GFZ is managed by an Executive Board which is responsible for all scientific and administrative issues. The Executive Scientific Director is Prof. Dr. Reinhard F. J. Hüttl and Dr. Bernhard Raiser is the Administrative Executive Director of the GFZ. The Board of Trustees supervises the GFZ Potsdam and comprises representatives from different Ministries in addition to top experts from Science and Industry. The "Chairman of the Executive Committtee" of the ICDP is Prof. Dr. Rolf Emmermann at the GFZ Potsdam, who is responsible for the overall management of the ICDP. The Operational Support Group at GFZ serves the EC and is part of a separate unit within the GFZ structure called "Scientific Drilling ICDP".

The Administrative Executive Director of the GFZ is responsible for the administration of the ICDP money, the control of the expenditures and all judicial business related to the formulation and negotiation of contracts such as the Memorandum of Understanding, Joint Research Ventures and other national or international agreements. He is assisted by the staff of the Administrative Executive Board and the Department "Budget and Finances" within the Administration of the GFZ. Proper expenditure of ICDP money is controlled annually by an external Auditing Company. This Audit Report is presented to the AOG every year who can in this way be informed of the correct use of ICDP money.
